Expat living in Czechia

About Prague 2000

The initial scheme of ‘The European City of Culture’ was launched at an intergovernmental level in 1985, and has been amended and altered several times. In 1992 a new event of ‘European Cultural Month’ was established; in 1992 a further resolution concerned the choice of future cities, and extending the period to a year. Prague chose Cultural heritage as the theme for the cultural year of 2000. The programme included traditional events in an innovative environment and projects specially designed for the year 2000. The projects with a European dimension included: Birth of a metropolis, an exhibition devoted to architectural thought and the birth of modern town planning from 1890 to 1937 in central Europe, which compared Prague, Budapest, Cracow, Zagreb and Ljubljana. The cycle of concerts were given in January 2000 by the internationally famouis pianist, Yefim Bronfman, covering all the works of Beethoven.
